Historic Addition

  • Kitchen addition to a 200+ year old home

  • Budget: $250k

  • Lexington, KY

This beautiful historic home had an existing kitchen addition from circa 1870 with an undermined foundation, the life safety issues arising from the existing structure allowed for an opportunity to repair the existing home and add a modern kitchen. The history of the home and pattern of use over time was analyzed and careful attention was paid to the existing context to derive the new kitchen addition. The kitchen structure lightly touches the existing home with a glass corridor and draws its form and takes cues from the study of the original structure. The kitchen volume’s clean, modern detailing compliments the stark lines of the federal house but remains it’s own entity, firmly establishing it’s point in time and not imitating the past. In addition to replacing the kitchen, the existing solid brick walls were repointed and the foundations were remediated and reinforced in order to ensure this home will continue to exist for another 200 years.
